Hi,
So, I recently got a copy of VTMB(CE), and as much as I love the game, I seem to have a strange in game control issue. Every now and then my vampire will not stop walking, even though I've taken my finger off of the walk button. No matter what button I press, she'll carry on walking for about 10 seconds or until she walks into a wall and is forced to stop. And when this happens, the mouse is unresponsive so I can't change the direction she's walking in either.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, how did you resolve it? It's really irritating me. I've installed all the latest patches, tried using a vampire from a different clan, uninstalled/reinstalled the game, and I've even tried using a different keyboard. Nothing seems to stop this problem. (It made visiting the haunted mansion a real pain in the neck - no pun intended.)

(I'm using Windows XP, Service Pack 3, DirectX 9, if that's any help.)

(And no, I'm not accidentally using the auto-walk function.)

Any help would be gratefully received, and many thanks in advance.

Are you minimising the game at any point or have a lot of background programs running?

This can be an issue without CE as well, it's usually caused by the interaction of the operating system and the game - theoretically it can't be CE causing it.

I've only had the issue when minimising the game to check something or if windows comes with a pop up about updates mid game. Anything sounding familiar?

I don't think I've ever actually minimized the game while playing it, but I do have a few programs running in the background (AVG, DTLite, etc), so I'll trying turning them all off and see if that makes a difference.

Will let you know if this works.

Between those programs you told like AVG and DTlite, I don't think they are the problem since I haven then installed here also and no problems, have you ever played VTMB in your actual computer before? And is CE the only MOD you're using?



I've had some problems in a few games after changing simple things like graphic card and in case of many mods installed, there can be a conflict.

Hi,

It's been a long time since I last ran an XP system, but if I remember right, it's best for games to run them in fullscreen mode, not in a windowed session and turn off all OS related key-combinations.
You might try that, if what 8people suggested doesn't help.

Okay...

So I have tried stopping all non-essential programs from running in the background, but it doesn't make any difference. I'm still walking for a few seconds after I've taken my finger off of the walk button.

Herbst; CE is the only MOD I'm using, and the game was behaving this way before I installed it.

And in regards to Childe of Malkav's post, I am running the game in fullscreen mode.

I have played the game using Sapphire Radeon HD2600 (512mb) and ATI Radeon HD4650 (1 gb), both have the same problem. All the drivers are up to date, and I don't have any problems with any of the other games I have (Fallout 3, Borderlands, RE5, etc).

As grateful as I am for the suggestions that have already been submitted, does anyone have any other ideas?

Maybe you already know that but I'll post anyway because I can't find any tips on internet about this problem, CE already comes with the official patch 1.2 and he install wesp's one included. Have you by any chance installed the 1.2 official patch and after that CE? We had a user a few days ago that had a game problem due to that.

Some things I would try:

1) Change the Foward button and see if it reacts the same way;

2) When PC start moving press "G" then press it again, if it doesn't work press the Autowalk button while he's moving and press once more.

Is that an original copy of the game/downloaded by Steam? Since the game does this bug even before adding any MOD I guess it's the CD copy or your .ISO image that may have a problem.


I have FlashGet,DTlite,Spybot and a lot of other programs running at the same time, video drive GeForce 7300 512 MB, Directx 9.0c and use Windows XP Home SP3 and it's running okay.

Update:

My computer caught a nasty bug so I was forced to format it (Mad). The only programs I installed on it were the graphics and sound card drivers and the game. I then started playing the game - and the non-stop walking is worse than ever. I think I can safely say the the problem isn't a clash of programs.

Herbst: I tried your suggestions, but they didn't work. Thanks for the idea though.

I'm going to try to try an alternative version of the game and see if that makes any difference.

I have now tried an alternative version of the game, but to no avail. I'm still having the same problem.

What I don't under is that when I first played the game, I didn't have this problem (with or without the CE mod). I haven't changed any of my software or hardware, and I've really run out of ideas of how to resolve this issue. I seem to have tried everything.

I think I'm getting to the point where I'm just going to have to give up, which is such a shame as I adore this game Sad

@Danae: Would be interested in the alternative version you have tried as I'm encountering the same issue. I had assumed it was the CE1.2 since it introduced the ALT auto-move function. I simply bear with it under that assumption that a bug caused the move forward command to simply loops itself certain times per what the ALT was coded to do - until a later realease (hopefully) fixes it.

From what I have experienced, it affects the move forward, but not the strafe left/right nor back pedal.

Hi Shift,

can you tell me more about your problem with the auto walk function. Personally I have no trouble with it, and I haven't herd any complaints yet either.

If you don't like it, you still can use the normal movement keys assigned in the options menu and not use the auto walk; and if it really annoys you, just remove it completely:

go to your vampires folder
open the file \vampire\cfg\autoexec.cfg with the editor
remove the lines
- alias go...
- alias stop...

- geek

Several months later, I think I have solved the problem. It would appear that the game was clashing with my graphics card drivers.
I have now installed the game on a PC with a Nvidia G-Force 6200 graphics card with the original drivers (not the latest ones) and so far so good.

So glad to hear it is working, I assume you can play CE 1.2 now? I once had a motherboard that had an ATI northbridge and I tried using an Nvidia card in it. It worked for the most part but had extremely strange issues with games. Like in Bloodlines the game would freeze randomly or textures would be missing from NPCs, or in Fallout 3 all NPCs would sound very far away.

I put an ATI card in it and it worked perfectly, so I took the motherboard back to newegg and got one with an Nvidia northbridge, put my old card in it and everything worked great! I guess ATI based motherboards and Nvidia based motherboards only play well with the same company of video card.

If you are still having your issue you can easily disable the auto-walk or toggle-walk features by opening the autoexec.cfg file in notepad located in the cfg folder. Just delete the following lines...

alias run "-speed;bind SHIFT walk"
alias walk "+speed;bind SHIFT run"
bind SHIFT walk
alias go "+forward;bind ALT stop"
alias stop "-forward;bind ALT go"
bind ALT go

You can even change the key bindings to other keys if you don't like the keys we've chosen.

I LOVE the alt run function - its just that I had suspicion it was the cause for the sticky forward move problem.
