Of course there were periods of good moral standards and utter shit... The Church is still not as deep in it as in times before Gregory The Great reforms. You know, the Pope openly worshiping the Devil and such minor infractions, orgies with cute boys, not even teen aged, not tho mention girls of similar age... In early Renaissance it was none too bright either. But the usual reaction was to go to G*d and his law, as it was then understood, not to capitulate to the temptations of the flesh. Where is Leo XII (if memory serves) who had his own secretary burnt at the stake for raping a boy... Before you ask, yes, that was the traditional Catholic penalty for pedophilia. Too bad it is no longer enforced.

As for freemasons, it was confirmed Cardinal Bergoglio was an active member of a lodge when elected Pope. Which, according to Canon Law, makes his election invalid.
