The Democratic Party run the city for decades. Micromanagement was implemented everywhere: up to who could own a grocery and where, what quota of whom could do what... Beaurocracy boomed, economy shrank. Unemployment and welfare boomed as well. City went bankrupt. Crime skyroketed. Minorieties became dominant (everyone else fled). Now many areas are a ghost town with skeletons of houses, malls, schools...

Lets not forget that the three industries that Detroit had, which allowed it to become a major city in the first place, all moved south or west. Sure, the management didn't help, but when your source of income forsakes you, just after you attracted piles of unskilled labor from across the continent, there's not a whole lot to be done.

Liberals didn't kill the Motor City, they just closed the coffin. I'm not convinced that conservatives could have done any better. A handful of true economists and a social engineer or two . . . they could have saved it, but it would have required either a significant third party or the collapse of one of the major parties in the US. With the two-party system, it's too difficult for any local agent to affect enough change to combat such a trend, as one party or the other will oppose merely to oppose.
