From the creative mind of Ragnar Tørnquist - creator of the award-winning The Longest Journey - comes a story unlike any before seen in a massively multiplayer online game.
Developer(s) Funcom Publisher(s) Funcom Electronic Arts Designer(s) Ragnar Tørnquist Martin Bruusgaard Platform(s) Microsoft Windows Release date(s) NA July 3, 2012[1] EU July 3, 2012 Genre(s) MMORPG, action-adventure
The game will feature an original setting created by Funcom, with contemporary elements as well as "magic, myths, conspiracies and dark horrors." Contrary to rumors spawned by the game's second working title, it has nothing to do with, nor is it inspired by, the .hack franchise and its setting. Tørnquist debunked several rumors surrounding The Secret World, stating that "there are no aliens or sci-fi elements" in it. He also denied any connection of TSW to The Longest Journey. At GDC 2009, Tørnquist revealed more about the setting and the story. He stressed that the game is set in the "modern day real world" but also incorporates pieces of ancient mythologies, real and false history, urban legends, and pop culture, and ties them into an original back-story. The latter is said to go back in time for 100 million years and encompass long extinct ancient civilizations. The players will assume the roles of supernatural heroes who participate in a "future war between good and evil", fighting dark monsters that threaten the modern world. Tørnquist identified the genre of the story as dark fantasy, mentioning vampires, demons, and zombies. The players will be free to travel across different locations of the world (both real, like London, New York and Seoul, and mythical, e.g. Agartha, the legendary city located within Hollow Earth) and even in time, to pursue the overall plot and investigate new mysteries in connection to the dark invasion. The overall plot will have a conclusion but the designers also leave room for future expansions.

Guys, I allowed myself to copy some content from another forum for this game.
It's an Horror MMO RPG that used to be Subscription based / Buy to Play but has now been overhauled with a new title - Secret World Legends - and it's with a free to play model.
Has anybody tried it and do you think you might be interested?
I would say it's a must for any H.P Lovecraft / Stephen King / Alan Poe fans!

Why is YamiRaziel doing free commercial for The Secret World? Anyways I played in the early days pre-reboot. Combat sucks which became too much of a drag for me to want to keep playing, and what I've seen of the reboot doesn't look much better. A little, but not much.
Otherwise it has some good atmosphere, voice acting and NPC writing from what I played of it, but imo the only way to make that carry the game is if you have a (RP) group to play with or are really into the universe in which case the leveling might not be so bad, especially for those who don't like more traditional "gather x bear asses" aspects, since TSW- while it has them -does a lot of investigative elements and such in its questing and has lots and lots of cutscenes.
Here's a video on the game by Ross Scott of Freeman's Mind fame for those interested. 40 mins long but it's informative and doesn't get dull imo.

I have not heard of this at all. Might try it, if time permits.

I played a 72 hour trial a couple years ago and enjoyed it. Atmosphere and writing are great and the lore is interesting, but the game suffers a bit from being an MMO and the baggage that entails. But if you like the MMO format, this seems like one of the better ones.
An issue I found is that if you want to play solo it's good to be damage oriented, but if you play with a group, meatshields are in greater demand.
My character was an Illuminati blood mage BTW. Totally-not-Tremere.

Well, I can share that with the overhaul, you can pretty much beat the whole story single player for free. It's pretty cool and the atmosphere/writing/music and voice acting are amazing. There are some quests that are literally out of this world (Tyler Freeborn)
I would definitely give it a try if I were you and looking for a game. If you're not into the MMO format, you can beat the story and all dungeons are solo-able in Story mode, so you don't need other people to enjoy the content.
