CE 1.2 crashing while loading char. creation

Okay, hi everybody.

First: Two thumbs up for your effort to create such a tempting mod.

My problem:

After downloading the mod, I installed a fresh version of Bloodlines (german DVD - version 1.2) ond started the CE installer.
Worked fine. Then I started a new game.
The CE loading screen popped up and the loading bar went instantly to about 10%.
Then I was kicked back to Windows. According to my Task Manager, there were no processes I could relate to Bloodlines.

So I followed the usual routine of changing resolution, rebooting, uninstalling and installing.
Unfortunately the problem didn't change.

The log said:

Vanilla Bloodlines ran without problems on the same machine.

Hope somebody could help me (it drives me crazy to have the baby on my HD, but being unable to play it )

What language are you installing Bloodlines in? Have seen trouble with different language mods on different installations.

My Bloodlines got translated into Russian once luckily that was the only problem.

Everytime in German.
The Bloodlines installer gave no other option (I can only change the language of the installer to english - which i did)

Other mods changed some dialogues to english, but worked fine.
(atually all dialogues in the german version are only subtitled - the mods only changed the subs)

I managed to install the Game in english - nevertheless i got kicked out at the same screen...

Maybe it's important:
After uninstalling CE, Bloodlines gives me right at the beginning (before the Activision logo appears) a VCR-Error (unable to load engine.dll).

I've seen that error before, the VCR whatever error. For some reason when CE 1.1 and CE 1.2 uninstalls it takes the engine.dll file with it. In order to get rid of CE 1.1 or 1.2 to go back to vanilla, you have to uninstall vanilla as well.

The other issue with the german language, others with the German DVD have had issues playing when they install it in the German language, I would suggest uninstalling CE, Bloodlines, and deleting the \Vampire\ sub folder in Program Files. Then reinstall Bloodlines with the English language, then install CE 1.2.

Give that a shot.

Uninstalled Patch.
Uninstalled Game.
Deleted whole Activision directory.
Installed Game into other directory.
Game worked.
Installed CE.
Game crashed.

I believe, some supernatural entity is feeding on my hope and despair...

Should I post the full error log?

Don't bother, they won't tell me anything...
From where did you download the CE 1.2 mod?
What OS are you using?

Edit: Idea Just to make sure everything is getting where it needs to go, try installing CE 1.2 to a folder on your desktop, then manually move those files into your \Activision\Vampire - Bloodlines\ folder, or wherever you installed the game, just make sure it goes into the \Vampire - Bloodlines\ folder so it overwrites all of those game files.

Didn't work either.

My OS is Win XP home.

I installed the mod on my old Win 2K computer and it worked... slooowly.

It's strange - my computer never had problems with vanilla Bloodlines or other mods...

Have you heard of DEP? May be called something else on your system if the OS is german, Data execution prevention - if a program accesses too much memory too fast it displays the same error as the Operating System prevents access - It can easily be disabled for specific programs, there are details in Windows Help, if you want I can look it up online for you though.

Another reason for that error code is RAM problems, something interfereing with your computers' memory. have you updated any drivers on your computer lately? Have you checked for any malware or viruses?

It's pretty much a Win XP SP2 specific error, SP3 may reduce it though there are no gauruntees. Where CE is such a large mod it could call on a lot of things at once causing the computing equivalent of a sudden panic attack of "I HAVE THREE SECONDS UNTIL MY UNIVERSITY COURSEWORK DEADLINE AND IT'S MEANT TO BE FIVE THOUSAND WORDS AND I STARTED IT HALF AN HOUR AGO BUT GOT SIDETRACKED BY FACEBOOK"

There may be a way to streamline some of the code to take the bearing load off of the poor thing, but I'm only a low level programmer, so probably wouldn't know if it slapped me in the face a few times!

Just to be clear, you are installing the English version right?

It's interesting what 8people said about those errors, I had never heard of that before. I guess I never thought to ask about the system specs. Oh and CE 1.2 was packaged with the exact same program in the exact same way as CE 1.1 so I don't think that has anything to do with it. Besides you extracted the files out manually and it still didn't work.

I hate to say it but I don't have the feintest clue as to why your game is crashing with CE 1.2 but doesn't with CE 1.1 or Vanilla versions. If it was something with CE 1.2 I would think it would be doing this with everyones including mine, but nobody has reported this specific error before.

I've never tried CE 1.1.
I just said other Mods (like Clan-Mod and 'skip the boooring intro') and Vanilla were working fine. (hope I got the grammar right...)

Okay, next step:
Install (again)
and try CE 1.1

(someday I will make a list of all the things I did while Bloodlines was installing... )

Can depend a LOT on backgroun operations on a computer. Plus most people have SP 3 with XP or Vista nowadays.

I have SP3. Doesn't help.

Besides: My problem starts even before the char. generator.
Correct me, if I'm wrong, but can the RAM-eating begin before the game's engine has been loaded (which is at the beginning of the intro, if I'm right...)?

Well... the next days I will update every updateable piece of software on my computer... hope dies last...

In theory as the menu itself can draw from a different source of code the engine could only load up key points if the player starts a new game or loads a game. Which is another point... can you load a game?

the engine for the game itself would be loaded as the intro is loading as it is in game graphics, unlike, say the Tomb Raider games where you see a cinematic movie first, instead of a cut scene cinematic.

I deleted my savegames at some point of my unsucessful installations.
Besides: Would a regular Bloodlines savegame work with CE?

Worth a shot - if you get the same error it's an engine problem - if it's just a new game then it could be a problem with the CE installation on your system.

I can't help but feel I'd be more useful if I specialised more in hardware as well

A most prudent choice...i would do the same if it weren't for the fact that I've no money...and my computer works as well as it's going to, I'll tell you what I'd tell any other rape victim though, if you keep trying with your previous computer and solve it then you'd be saving other women form getting raped by the same bug that raped you...i mean crashed you.
