Am I insane that he makes so much sense to me? How do I deal with my father's opinions, he's brainwashed so much he believes our socialists, when Hillary says 'USA is the best country in the world' he nods. Or am I the brainwashed one? Please lock me up and blow up the nukes.

People of our parents generation simply believe the media. Thanks to the net, we grew to habitualy check and cross-reference...

I fear that's not really true for most people of our generation. I don't even consistently do it myself.

I personally think that the actual fact-checking and cross-referencing is exceedingly rare, more so than in prior generations. What has changed is that we default to 'distrust' rather than 'trust' and thus are less likely to believe what someone is saying, excepting of course confirmation bias when what we see/hear/read supports our previous opinion (and this generation is marvelous at twisting things to support their preconceived notions . . .).
In my opinion, the more useful question to ask (and more interesting) is what caused this shift to assume we are being deceived or manipulated even by those we trust to take care of us.

Constant efforts of the establishement may be to blame. You cannot con a society endlessly, no matter how moronic that society is in its mass. As for checking facts, you are right. My students never check enything. I may be from the small populace of a short generation that ceaed to believe in the massmedia, but wasn't decieved by social media yet.

Meh. Not to fall on mere relativism, but I don't consider Roosevelt or Churchill to be any sort of heroes. Being "better than Hitler" is not that much of an achievment

Kind of depends on the quality being measured, doesn't it? Being "better than Hitler" at gathering public support, or at non-military take-overs of other countries actually would be quite the accomplishment. Being "better than Hitler" at body counts attributed to you takes some work. Being "better than Hitler" at painting landscapes is nothing to sneeze at, but also nothing to brag about. Being "better than Hitler" at Uno (tm) is not really an accomplishment. Being "better than Hitler" at maintaining a positive public image for 50 years is my minimum expectation of humans. Being "better than Hitler" at keeping your cousins from literally signing contracts with foreign governments to try and kill you is easy. See? It all depends on what you are measuring.
