How does he work now? I don't see any books (options are "1. Later," "2. ..."). Should I presume books become viable when my research is high enough? If so, pc should be alerted to that fact (Akeem text "You res is not high enough." perhaps?).

Do you have enough money? You need 250$ (minus a bit for high haggling) to buy a first or second level book. He only offers books you can learn and afford.
Maybe I can add a player line
-"Your books are too expensive."
-"I'm too stupid for your wisdom." , or something like it.

Anyway, seeing the point value is nice, could you do the same with price?

You get more when your haggling increases. Next will be 3, then 6, 10, 15... up to 45 per level.

Sorry, I can't do that. It would mean one line per booklevel and haggling level.
So instead of 5*12=60 lines 5*12*10=600.
I can try something, but I'm pretty sure the dialog texts don't accept variables or python functions.
