CE1.6 Ming Xiao Stunlock Empty
PostSubject: CE1.6 Ming Xiao Stunlock   CE1.6 Ming Xiao Stunlock EmptyWed Feb 20, 2013 12:58 am

My first playthrough with a presence higher than 1 point (I generally don't play for debuffs in RPGs, though I'm running out of new playstyles with Bloodlines), so I'm not sure how presence normally effects this fight.

I played through (nice mod, by the way - first time I've ever liked playing Ventrue, since Dominate is actually good now.), tore my way through the temple and was looking forward to seeing what Ming Xiao was like with a character built around a combat/debuff focus - I tend toward the "rogue" class, using traditional RPG labels. Go through the conversation, she transforms, and I flick on presence. She stops moving. I pull out a gun and shoot her to knock off the Mesmerize - I didn't want to exploit that first strike advantage too badly, given how much of a terror my character was on the battlefield already. She still doesn't move. I unload the rest of the clip, taking down a quarter of the health bar. She still doesn't move. 3 clips later, she dies, still sitting where she was when I activated presence.

As I said, I've never used high level presence before, so I have no idea if this is specific to CE, but it really does seem odd. She's immune to knockback, which made me think it might be that knockback is what cancels the mesmerize effect, but so is the Sheriff (from what I can tell), and the mesmerize part of Presence worked properly on him.

Not a game stopping bug (just the opposite) and I can fight her just fine by avoiding the use of presence or hoping for that 60% chance that she won't get locked down, but it's somewhat problematic. I can easily see pouring experience into presence to get through with low direct combat stats, leaving that kind of player with either a virtually impossible fight (without presence) or an anticlimactic execution.

Perhaps Ming (or all health-bar triggering enemies) should be immune to the mesmerize part of presence? If that's possible? 1 free hit on such enemies is rarely a huge issue.

Hello Rashkavar!
Welcome to the most awesome forum of internet (blood)suckers!
Honestly, I never had such a problem with Presence, no matter what mod I used.
Have you installed any other mods alongside CE? What is your operating system?
Windows 7 has a known tendency to mess with Bloodlines.

I have Windows 7, and the only problems I ever had were at the start -- either the black screen during the cutscene, or the game wouldn't run at all. Installing the Unoffcial Patch (or any mod that is based on the UP, like CE) and updating all of my drivers fixed the problem.

I've never had anything lock up, or any characters stop moving like he described.

Hm, on the occasions when I played presence characters I've never encountered similar problems either. But I'm not sure if I used it against Ming.

Windows 7, CE on a fresh install (though I didn't delete the prior install directory completely - just used the uninstaller. I did notice some models were those used in the graphics skin I had been using - it's possible there were traces of a newer version of the Unofficial Patch than CE 1.6 supports hanging around as well.

And while Windows 7 does have a few minor issues with older games like Bloodlines, I've never seen an OS incompatibility glitch effect a specific ability in one and only one instance - it seems too specific for that. And, as stated earlier, the UP fixes most of the issues (the only one I can think of also occured in 3 other aged games as well, so not a VtMB-specific issue).

Good to know it's at least not a consistent error. I found myself liking how Presence works, but having a Presence based character break the Xiao fight would make me avoid such builds.

Completely unrelated, but I have to wonder about the balance of the Dominate abilities. 3 evasion aides with no blood cost makes stealth even easier with Dominate than Obfuscate, and Tyrant's Gaze and Still the Mortal Flesh are exceptionally powerful for one blood cost. Especially given the other 3 Dominate skills make hunting very easy - if there are 2 people together, trance one, feed on the other, trance the guy you fed on and feed off the other guy, too.

Then again, I've played a couple of games with just the Plus unofficial patch where the only dicipline I ever used was blood buff because my starting build didn't have enough lockpicking to get through the tutorial without it. (I generally do play the tutorial for the free lockpick and 2 experience.) So maybe having much more potent diciplines is better - at least they're useful.
