PostSubject: Holy Blood Buffet Batman!   Holy Blood Buffet Batman! EmptyMon Sep 27, 2010 1:13 am

With the amount of blood dolls in downtown I'm really getting to feel like my toredor is in her element! No more seducing hookers for a feed, and god forbid actually hunting, I can barely walk down the street without finding another willing vessel to feed off. Though the male blood doll outside hollowbrook is a little creepy..

Good for you then. Very Happy

I'm currently playing a Tremere with the Eerie Presence history. There's no freaking way for me to feed via seduction.

Oh, and the blood dolls?

(Walks up to a female blood doll.)
Blood Doll : Yes, you are?
Tremere : I'm the guy who's gonna get you pregnant!
Blood Doll : What? Get away from me!
Tremere : But I just wanted to...
Blood Doll : Aaahhhh!!!! (Runs away)

Then it leads to a merry chase where I'll corner her to a dark alley and feed on her. Either it's hilariously disturbing or disturbingly hilarious.

Good thing Tremeres have Theft of Vitae.

Downtown L.A. is usually the place where I stop raising my Seduction feat, even for the Ventrue. If I'm playing Toreador, I may raise it enough to feed from blood dolls in Hollywood. But if I need a lot of blood, it's easier to just go back to Santa Monica or Downtown to feed, rather than keep spending points merely to get the dolls in Chinatown to give you the time of day. In PnP terms, Santa Monica and Downtown are "The Rack", the parts of town where it's easier to feed.

Gangrel or Nos, it's easier to pop down into the sewers for a little ratsucking. Brujah will just grab them in an alley or dark street. Ventrue and Tremere have Dominate... Trance is their way of saying, "Stop right there, I'm thirsty."

Although, I sometimes wish that Ventrue were a bit more restricted in whom they may feed from. Only men, only women, ghouls, people in suits or dresses, hunters... it would make things much harder in the game, but more accurate with regard to the clan concept. I'm not asking for any changes to be made; I'm just thinking out loud.

Could be made into a Background History - you may only feed on male\female kine but you get half more blood per feed or something.

It's also a compulsion clan weakness, so roleplaying it is probably easier cyclops

Met a Ventrue who could only feed on natural blondes - the taste of bleach was simply sickening to him and would almost drive him to frenzy.

The only Ventrue I ever met in a p&p game could only feed on people who are smaller than him. The guy was sired in the 1950s, and only about 1.65m (5'6"). Had a few problems by the end of the nineties, when the game actually was played...

Gamers who play Ventrue seem to have a compulsion to tell you what type of prey they are restricted to. It seems to me that this is not the sort of thing you want to tell everyone. If I were the guy who could only feed on short people, I'd pick my prey with some other feature that they have in common, like brown hair or something else that's obvious, so that people think that's my feeding restriction. That way an enemy can't target my herd.

Though sometimes cornering them could get a little tricky. So when I got Theft of Vitae all I do is hide in a dark corner and blast away at nearest kine.

Hmm, correct me if I'm wrong but there's a history for that right? But I think it's only available for female vampires and they get more blood if they feed on males.

I'd guess this is where you put the role playing part in the game.

P&P Ventrue is, indeed, hard to play because of the real restriction. In Bloodlines, it just means "no rats". And even then, you can feed on them, but you don't get any blood (and Jack mocks you during the tutorial because you did try, catch a rat and ate it.. a Ventrue wouldn't even try, he'd refuse).

I once had a player whose Ventrue would only feed on "pure bodies", which means anyone without tatoo, piercing or who had been operated quite heavely.

Then why bother to play a Ventrue then? Just for the role-playing aspect? I mean, with that kind of forced restriction a munchkin player would never touch that clan.

Exactly. Munchkins only like the flaws they can get extra points for, and then ignore afterwards. They wouldn't like the roleplaying and social interaction necessary to play a Ventrue anyway.

I mentioned this in the 'Favorite Clan' thread, but Ventrue is my favorite clan to play in Bloodlines. I like the Dominate options in conversation, and a high Fortitude and Presence makes him a tank in combat. That wimpy Sheriff can't touch me.

Generally in a roleplaying game that's designed for roleplaying and not munchkinism having aspects you can roleplay is beneficial.

As for munchkin pnp players.

I'm running out of places to hide the bodies.

Strange, I always thought that pnp was already munchkin proof. I mean DMs, or in the case V:tM storytellers, have the power to prevent that right?

My only experience in pnp was AD&D, I played a half-orc barbarian with low intelligence scores so my role-play was more like dumb muscle. Never got to be the DM. And I find easier to play that part with other party members doing the talking.

You would think so. Some DM's don't have the nads to keep them in line, though. They don't want their players to dislike them. Pfah! Better to be respected as a DM or storyteller... and maybe a little feared, hehe. Smile

In one game I played a thief because they needed one. Not good, but not evil. They didn't trust me at first, until they realized that I didn't steal from party members; that's stupid. But every time they wanted to do something altruistic, I wanted to know what we'd be getting out of it. Just common sense stuff.

DMs, Storytellers, GMs, they're there to make the game run and also make it fun for the players. Sometimes you get a moron player and they have to be kicked out of the group, or their character dies and they make a massive fuss ("I shouldn't have died! I'm a main character! That's not fair!")

I've run D&D games, VtM games, a couple of others I've been involved in as an assist for other rules or just been a player. I've even met players who claim they're amazing at roleplaying - because they always manage to maximise the dice they can roll at any one time. Then get annoyed when it's pointed out they're roll-playing not roleplaying.

You even get people who play pnp RPGs like they'd play an FPS then get REALLY upset when they're asked to leave the group because they're making everyone else miserable after weeks of being told there's a problem and act like nobody said anything to them.

One of the pains was running my first VtM game with a group whos prior experience was D&D only - they complained a lot that the XP progression was slow and they had a tendency to min-max at first. The one person who had previous experience with WoD games (a whole lot as well!) was the one who made the most fuss and kept telling the others it was a "cool action game" and who kept getting into daft situations and complaining when it resulted in final death
"When you hit it it's blood burns you, take damage." (He's using protean claws)
"I hit it some more!"
"... um, well you take damage then."
He repeated this until
"Just so you know, if I take another hit then I'll die."
"Yes, I saw that on your sheet! What are you going to do now?"
"I hit it again."
*hands a new sheet*

Also backseat DMs are not cool, having a player sit and contradict you on the rules on a regular basis and because they have more experience having the other players 'take sides' with them. Including one point him asking what year it was and the answer "The current year" being around 2004 he tutted, shook his head then said "Well that's stupid then, we're not playing WoD because the apocalypse would have happened." Yuck. How old are these people? Just...yuck. Well, if anything I guess this is a great way to winnow these fools away. Permanently.

"No."

PostSubject: Re: Holy Blood Buffet Batman!   Holy Blood Buffet Batman! EmptyThu Sep 30, 2010 11:11 pm

I haven't played PnP for years; mostly because I can't find a group of adults that I'd want to game with. I don't miss the spoiled brats like you've mentioned. What I miss are the people I gamed with for years, who respected each other and worked as a team, and didn't take the game personally.

I've played D&D the longest, but also played GURPS, Warhammer, VtM, and a number of others. If you're with a group of people you like, the game system doesn't matter... what's important is that everyone works together to play their roles, and have fun. That's why it's called a game.

To reconnect with the topic... when playing a Ventrue in Bloodlines, I take the feeding restriction a little more seriously than I have to. No feeding from bums or prostitutes, no gang members; only the upper class pedestrians, and in battle situations ghouls are really tasty. This isn't something the game requires me to do; I am trying to be more like a PnP Ventrue. I've considered restricting myself more than that, but this is a video game, and certain concessions must be made. That's why the game designers didn't make Ventrue PC's pick only one type of mortals they could feed from.

[Added later] Oh, and Blue Blood packs. Not the cheap stuff. Smile

I bow down to such dedication.

Never played with a Ventrue, but with a male Tremere that has an eerie presence all the role-playing was to weird out the blood dolls on the clubs. On the streets, well, you must have seen on my prior post. Also, my character is very respectable to Strauss and a little more civil to the prince.

But more on feeding. I usually go for female kine. Call it stupid, but back in my literature classes my professor pointed out that in Victorian times or earlier, the neck was a very sensual and often sexual area of the body. Hence, the literature of vampires biting on the neck. The only time I feed on males is during battle, when I can't afford to be picky.

Anyone else with these kind of role-playing habits when feeding?

Well, I avoid bums, prostitutes, rats, and bloodpacks (even elder vitae) unless I'm really hungry (bloodpool 5 and lower) and there is no chance to fill up soon with better stuff.
I might snatch a rat or two after the ocean house, or if I had to use a lot of blood while dealing with brother Kanker. And I try to fill up before I jump down to Gary in the Warrens, so I can get through the three dialogues without too much worrying on time and bloodloss.
Combat feeding is something different. If I need blood in battle, or if I can avoid really fighting by sucking them dry I do it. No matter who it is, it's just opportunistic then.

I've treated the elder vitae as some sort of late game power up. In my first game, back in vanilla, I only used it during the final boss fights. I've read some lore about elder vitae being "rare" so what I did was to resist the temptation of buying in the blood bank for future games.

On sucking them dry, in the Hollowbrook Hotel I usually feed on the male blood slaves when I need to. The only thing I don't do is to suck them dry. I don't know if it would incur a humanity loss since I always avoided killing them with feeding.
