Are there any Fallout topics here on the forum?

I don't think so. And if you could avoid FO4 spoilers that would be nice. I'm still planning to play that game some day.

Me too! But people already spoiled bits of it to me when they decide to compare the games of the franchise ;(
Fallout 3 is cool, and unlike anything I ever played before.
But know what? Fallout: New Vegas is ON SALE 50% BITCHES HERE I GO

I liked New Vegas better than FO3. The biggest thing to me is that while FO3 felt like a post-apocalypse amusement park, FO:NV felt like a coherent world. One could say the setting is post-post-apocalyptic (society is recovering and has progressed past the "wild west" stage) and that seemed to put off some people, but I liked it. It does take place centuries after the original Fallout, it only makes sense that thing shave progressed by now. I also really liked the faction dynamic and you actually make meaningful choices during most quests. The writing is better too and they polished several game mechanics.
As far as weaponry goes, my personal favorite are energy weapons in general and the laser rifle in particular. Great for headshots and plentiful ammo. And you can freely convert energy weapon ammo types from one to another and there are only 3 to begin with. With guns almost every weapon uses different bullets and while you can convert ammo to a degree you'll always be limited by the number of casings.
How many of you guys have played the original two Fallouts?

I tried to play Fallout 2 once and it was awful. I was turned off by everything I saw and heard. Deleted the game before 5 minutes. But that was after having played NV so there's that.
I played New Vegas a lot and it was great. I never expected myself to like a western post-apocalyptic game, since I usually hate cowboy fiction and post-apoc fiction (I still get disturbed by the people saying "HOwdy!" to me in fallout).
Never played 3 or 4. I've heard that the consensus was that 3 was simply inferior in everyway to NV, and that 4 was fun and streamlined but removed most of the RPG aspects from the game ,as Skyrim did in Elder Scrolls.

The first two Fallouts were great, but I can see how one could dislike them if one started with the modern entries in the series.

Pretty much what happened to me with the first Fallout. I tried really hard again with Tactics but running around with a group of six in a clunky turn-based system where I have to grind my way up to have a reliable hit chance is not what I'm there for so I just let it slide and went back to FONV. I also liked 4 in its own way, but it's definitely the inferior game. And now Creation Club is gonna (or has) fucked it completely I hear, though I don't wanna be quoted on it. Was told it can install mods even if you don't have them or something and take up unnecessary space.

Explosives are so fun! I can blow unsuspecting people from very far away, and when I throw grenades with V.A.T.S. at them they yell OH NO in slow motion XD
Sniping people is fun, but not nearly as much. Sneak is useless when the enemy is already in the Caution state.

As far as I played, Fallout New Vegas is a league above F3 and F4. Combined.
I don't know, the game feels... alive. It's an organic feeling, NPC's have a lot more to talk about, and every action matters so you end caring about them!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: FO3 is Postapocalypseland amusement park. FO:NV is a coherent game world.

Very good and detailed video whose main drawback is that it's 2 hours. Sufficed to say, I think he picks the game apart pretty brilliantly. If you have time to kill, I recommend having a look.

@Kara
That was one of the best videos that describes Bethesda Games. Skyrim fits so much in this triad of Exploration -> Combat -> Loot, with most of it being Width instead of Depth that it's unreal. Hell, all of the factions, even the civil war quests can be reduced to "Go there, kill draugrs, return"

Shame. Oh well, I suppose that saves me 2 hours I can spend on doing something else. I think I have a pretty good idea what the gist of it is based on what Philo said.

It spoils pretty much everything, yeah.
He makes the argument of Exploration -> Fight -> Loot and then goes on to give explicit details on to the plot holes in the stories of the base game and the DLC.
I didn't play Fallout 4 but it's so far down the list of games I want to play that I didn't mind

I watched the first 20-25 minutes of the video before it got too spoilery and it seems pretty much spot on for Bethesda games in general. Everything is self-contained, nothing is connected. In Skyrim the civil war does touch on other things, but in a background way. The things you do in the context of the civil war do not have any serious effects on any of the other stuff you can do.
That already annoyed me back in Oblivion. Every faction went through a crisis that threatened it's existence (except maybe TG), but outside that faction nobody gave a shit.
Even Morrowind is kind of like that, though not as much as later games. You do at least have the conflict between Cammona Tong controlled Fighter's Guild and Thieves Guild, even if all it really does amounts to getting some bad rep with the TG if you get the code book and having two different ways to complete the FG questline. And I suppose there are some quests that play out differently based on what great house you join (Odirniran, Shishi). And in Morrowind having a high rank in a faction makes people from other factions like or hate you based on the relationship between the factions, so I guess that's a consequence of sorts though it gets overridden if you join the other faction.
