Well, well... I am not surprised. Jared Diamond had postulated that alcohol consumption had an impact on the shift from semi-nomadic culture to a sedentary one. Brewing alcohol, drinking it and then (painfully) sobering up is a rather lengthy process, impractical for nomads. Sedentary people had time for all this, as well as better acces to grains for fermentation. In fact, first harvested barley could have been used for beer, not bread. If so, one might argue that agriculture is indeed a byproduct of alcoholism.

I have heard of this theory aswell. Civilization is a byproduct of people drinking alcohol and thinking "shit, this is awesome!"

I think it's plausible. I do think you need a special push to make people transition from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to farmwork. I think alcohol is a better explanation for it than just "more food". You could also get more food by just spending more time hunting and gathering, but that won't get you alcohol.
