The downside of having to learn it in classes with noone to practice with- I know the words, and I can read and understand it just fine, but my conjugation is... not so good.

That and the fact that the only person I have ever been able to speak it with cosistently is my grandmother who learned it from her father, who she hadn't seen or spoken to since the late 1940's...

@ Feral- Nein, meine familie hat zu Amerika im 1923 auswandern- ich komme aus New York. Mein Mutter familie hat aus Frankfurt gekommt, und mein Vater familie sind von Zurich, und emigrieren im 1875.

Yes, I had figured that out even before I had completely read the sentence. But it doesn't look very latin to me. Probably because I'm old enough to know a bit about real latin.

I thought it would be something like what we in Germany call Jägerlatein (hunter's latin) or Anglerlatein (fisherman's latin). Everytime you tell about the fish you caught on your last fishing trip, it gets bigger and bigger...

I know this fully well... No one to practice my German with, too. And I'm half of German blood. Shame.
But wait, Zurich? Ah, the Swiss are also Germans. But don't tell them just that. I once told some Austrians that they were in fact Germans and it wasn't pretty.

Yeah, I always specify that my fathers family is German-Swiss, and if anyone takes issue with that, I just explain that I mean that as opposed to Italian-Swiss or French-Swiss, since he's from the north of the country and we know his native language was German. He also, incidentally, married the daughter of a Bavarian couple who had immigrated here about a decade before our Civil War. So considering him and his wife, AND my mothers family, I've got at least three different types of German swimming around in my gene pool.

Well, German-Swiss, or german speaking Swiss is ok. But just German
As for Bavarians being german, that's a topic hotly discussed everywhere north of the "Weißwurst Äquator" (the river Main)

Why, you all speak German?
I wouldn't mind, by the way. My national affiliations are decided by my best interests. I might have swapped citizenship for British if some buisness worked out. With my ancestry I might one day go for German passport as well. Or Russian, if they ever get to be relatively normal country. Unlikely event, though. If anything, I have 25% Polish blood tops.
