Can't pick up objects

I'm having a problem where the use command isn't working to pickup/throw objects.

I had to trick my way through the part of the tutorial where you have to throw the can to distract the guard, and now I'm stuck not being able to get into the morgue because of the board in the way.

Is there any known solution to this problem?
