Can't Pick up anything Empty

I just started a new playthrough as a Gangral Vagabond(Clan/history). I've not been able to pick anything up since tutorial and this has made doing the "Asian vampire" quest given by Bertram's annoying ghoul impossible. Any ideas on what's wrong and how to fix this?
