Already started. I thought that once you sent an order, you had to wait for the remainer of your turn to play; turns out I have to check the game everyday, not once every 5-7 days!

I have no idea what "Sum of squares" point system means
I have gotten Austria, which I guess is germany light. Is there any point in holding non-supply center territory?

It is Germany without the organization...
Defense of supply centers? Consolidating your gains?

Yay! We started. Special thanks to Kara and Sally for making it possible. But feel free to actually play too. You might find out you like it.

Yes, that's me. The idea was that sexism would make people underestimate me if they thought I was a woman, so I picked a female name as my username. But to give people a hint I chose a female name with a root that means 'man'.

Neutral countries are just ripe for taking?
Yes. You just move in. But keep in mind that ownership of supply centers (SCs for short) only changes after the autumn turn. So if you move into Spain on spring and then move on to Portugal in autumn, you will become the owner of Portgual, but not the owner of Spain.
You're lucky though. Out of 3 neighbors that France has only one is an active player and France is already widely considered to be the best nation in the game. You can take Belgium and Holland uncontested and grow nice and fat on eating up Sally and Kara.

Sum of squares means that if the game ends in a draw, everoyne gets points based on the square of the SCs they hold. So for example having 12 SCs isntead of 10 is 44% better (10²=100, 12²=144).
The empty provinces can have strategic value (Gascony for example borders all of France's home SC + Spain), but do not directly contribute to victory.

Oh shit, I didn't realize that. I thought that if you placed your army on it, it became yours, but you would only gain the new army after autumn

I hope Kara and Sally at least give it a try... They might like it.

I do too. Right now things are looking to get quite unbalanced. Though I suppose the game self-balances when everybody gangs up on the leader.

This will be helpful to read: http://webdiplomacy.net/intro.php
Also, it's useful to check the website at least twice a day to see if there are any messages if you can. The talking and planning is half the game.

There's a 5 player mode based on Ancient Mediteranean!
I would love to try it if/when people want to and are available
Also, Draggy, what are the things about the bets and stuff? What happens if I'm such a loser that I lose all my starting coins?

You get new ones. 100 is the lower limit (exception is made for coins invested in still ongoing bets).
And that 5 player map looks intriguing.

I'll pass. Not because I don't think I might get into it, but because I don't wanna put the time and energy I don't have in.

So I did manage to join an ancient mediterranean version of the game and I'm playing as Persia. Gonna try to make a truce with Greece and fuck Egypt up.

Most importantly it only requires 5 players.

Which means, you have to drop 1 player of the 6 you have.
