Computer passwords Empty
PostSubject: Computer passwords   Computer passwords EmptyTue Jun 29, 2010 6:29 am

I was thinking.... is it possible to make the computer passwords random? If we do that the player won't be able to cheat using walkthroughs and not spending exp in hacking.
It is going to be cool if the game generates different password each time.
For those passwords that have some specific meaning, they could be changed the following way:

Jeanette's Laptop - Contacts: callme
Email: wishes

can be generated into:

Jeanette's Laptop - Contacts: 122callme335
Email: 562wishes1678

Every new load/game can have its own unique numbers.

And now the most important question of all! Is it a good idea to take away people's opportunity to cheat? Smile

However changing the passwords that are written down so the player can find them will be impossible to update in the same manner.

If people cheat it's hardly a modders problem. It's not like future versions of CE will completely remove the console. How about people cheating up stats? Or using noclip to avoid a particularly irritating trap?

If the passwords changed every playthrough people would just alter their computer use ability via another method.

It's also not possible through current coding, as far as I am aware, for true randomising in the particular standards the engine uses.

It may be possible to run a script according to time, as in create a timer that remembers the last time you hacked the computer so the password changes each time you hack it. Problem is the notes that 8people talked about.

The passwords are coded along with the hacking difficulty and the function/email in the hackterminal textfiles for the individual computers. So I don't see a chance to randomize them.
And many passwords are available from outside sources like papers lying around, or emails on weaker protected computers, or even told by someone, so you don't need to be an expert hacker for every computer. If the computer is important for the main quests, you can usually find the password somewhere else. And I don't want to change that.

I wasn't talking about those passwords that are involved in main quests, of course. I was talking about the other funny or interesting stuff that can be found in people's computers.
Raising a certain stat sounds a lot more like cheating than reading a password in a walkthrough. If something like this is implemented people will feel that they receive something in return for spending xp in hacking. Because at the moment hacking is even more useless than inspection.
And as 8people said, if somebody still want to cheat, he can still use the console Smile

I actually like this idea for TFN, except I would probably just change the passwords, not write a script to make them change on a rotation or anything. I don't even know if such a script is possible. Either way, ya I'd like some new passwords too, just as long as I make sure to find any notes that I'd need to change too.
