It sounds like an oxymoron to me. Granted, I'm not exactly sure what the details are.

Either it's a)
"Oh you have a serious mental issue? Let's solve it with sex!"
or b)
"You're having trouble with sex? Let's pay someone else a boatload of money to help!"

Either way, it sounds stupid and trivial.

Hahaha, a sex therapist is kind of like a marriage counselor/psychologist/sex advice person. It's not like I go in and tell people HOW to have sex, although sometimes coaching is involved. xD

The job involves educating people into being able to use sex as a tool to better the quality of their lives and their relationships and their self-image. :3

It makes sense, if you think about it. What with all the endorphins and natural highs that can be had, managing sex correctly can nearly eradicate reoccurring negativity in a person, instead of relying on pills that artificially inhibit or alter brain chemistry. It offers something a person can control, which I think needs to be discussed with people more freely. What more does a person want than control of their lives?

And my girlfriend wants to be a psyche major or neuroscientist, so she is extremely supportive of my wanting to become a sex therapist. xD

Sex therapy won't solve every issue with a person, but some people would like to shed some serious inhibitions in their sex lives that may be related to a past occurrence, and they will need a kind of rehabilitation to be able to share something with a person they love that has since become tainted in their own regard. Such as a rape victim wanting to become intimate, but being terrified to ease into it. Such things a sex therapist can help with.

Or men with mentally-induced impotence. That also requires some of the talking-relative side of being a sex therapist.

Or even helping to strengthen a relationship between a married couple, one or both of whom are physically unable to express themselves in a usual sort of way. These things have to be addressed, still.

And why can't these duties be handled by an older profession?

Well, a psychiatrist's job is to assign medication, because their beliefs reside in the purely pharmaceutical explanations of the brain, and a psychologist may only be able to tell you WHY you may be mentally inhibited, and a usual medical doctor can only inform you that you have a physical disability,

but a sex therapist tells you how to address these things. They can inform you that there are options. This is to say more goes on than prescribing viagra and saying "HAVE AT IT."

But sex therapy, like other forms of physical- and mental-betterment aid, is an elective process. I will not preach to you about why it is a good choice if you are already convinced it's silly.

Really? I find this ironic considering that I'm asking you to explain what makes it worthwhile. Would you be willing to tell me why this particular subject warrants its own field, instead of merely being another tool of a regular therapist?

Well, there is a specialist for every field, is there not?

For example, where there are zoologists, there are marine-biologists, and herpetologists, and botanists, and so on and so forth.

Most people studying a profession specialize in something. There are some problems that are completely unrelated to sex therapy, such as bi-polarity, or sociopathic tendencies that must be addressed by other specialists of a mental-science background. It is safe to say that all who study something at length, fall into a niche of interest. A regular therapist most likely will refer a patient to a sex therapist if the problem is specific enough, because their own studies did not delve deeply into the subject of sex, and rather than 'hazard a guess' at a problem, they would call the specialist. Of all the things studied by mankind, there is no example of a perfect expert. Study divides into general knowledge and specific understanding. Which is why all who study a subject submit a thesis before obtaining a degree, which explores their understanding of their studies and where they are going with them.

Going back to the specialist's example, this is why ears/nose/throat doctors do so well despite being only experts on the sinus-area of the human head. Common illnesses stem from that general area of the body so frequently, they are in good business. They keep getting referred to by general physicians because of their specialties, in their readily accessible understanding of common bacteria cultures that affect a human body, or what certain inflammations in tissue mean, though their studies are inherently similar to other medical professionals. It's all about getting a better and more specific professional opinion to address a problem.

So, that is why sex therapy does not fall as being a tool of a "regular therapist."

There is too much to consider about the mental/emotional/physical aspects of the sexual nature of a human being to chalk it up to only one of each and treat a problem in a fractious, contradicting manner that a group of professionals from a background of broad understanding from an "older profession" might present if they are asked separately about the same issue.

That is why it is worth while.
